This ridge extends eastward from Mt. Karamatsu (2,696 meters) in the Ushiro Tateyama mountain range on the border between Nagano and Toyama prefectures. The slopes of Mt. Happo (1,974 meters) in the middle of the ridge are known as Nagano's leading mountain ski resort. There are many lifts, but there is also a ropeway that stretches about 2,000 meters from the foot of the mountain to Usagidaira (1,397 meters), and most of the descent is done from here. It is in operation in the summer, and from Usagidaira you can see the entire Hakuba Sanzan of Mt. Shirouma, Mt. Shakushi, and Mt. Yari. Hakuba Village Happo (Hosono) at the foot of the mountain is where the first private lodging in the prefecture was established.
