A unit of mass for elementary particles and atoms. The symbol is "u". The mass of one carbon-12 atom is 12.0, and 1/12 of that is 1u. This value is equivalent to approximately 1.66054× 10-27 kg. The mass of each atom is a relative value based on this standard. The average of the atomic mass values of naturally occurring isotopes using their abundance rate is called the atomic weight of that atom, with the atomic weight of oxygen being 16.0 and that of nitrogen being 14.0.
