Tar (English spelling)

Japanese: タール(英語表記)tār
Tar (English spelling)
A type of musical instrument. It is a plucked string instrument used in Iran and Caucasus countries such as Azerbaijan, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Georgia. It has a long neck with movable frets wrapped with mutton strings and a string storehouse at the end. The underside of the uniquely shaped hollowed-out body is covered with a thin layer of lamb's skin. It is played with a small metal plectrum, making extensive use of tremolo. The number of strings varies by region, but the tar used in Iranian classical music today has three courses of double strings (metal strings). Originally derived from the Persian word for stringed instrument, it is the most important plucked string instrument in Central Asian music today, along with the dotar (two-stringed).

tar

A general term for the black or brown oily bituminous material that remains when carbon compounds such as coal, petroleum, and wood are pyrolyzed. A typical example is coal tar, obtained by carbonization of coal. It is used as a raw material in the synthetic chemical industry after being redistilled into its components, and is also used as is for paints and fuels. In addition to coal tar, there are also shale tar, wood tar, oil gas tar (a by-product of petroleum gasification), and petroleum tar.
