Iwanami Shoten Co., Ltd.
Founded in 1913 by Iwanami Shigeo in Jinbocho, Kanda, Tokyo. Originally a second-hand bookstore, it entered the publishing world in 1914 with Natsume Soseki's Kokoro, and secured a position in the publishing world with the Philosophical Series and the Complete Works of Soseki. In 1927, it began publishing the Iwanami Bunko series, and in 1938, Iwanami Shinsho. It also launched the monthly academic journal Shisou in 1921 and the general journal Sekai in 1946. By promoting the classics and publishing academic books that met real-world needs, it formed the so-called "Iwanami culture," which was contrasted with the "Kodansha culture." After Iwanami Shigeo's death in 1949, the company became a joint-stock company, and the current president is no longer a hereditary succession from the Iwanami family. In 2000, it launched Iwanami Gendai Bunko, and in 2002, Iwanami Active Shinsho.
