Dutch portrait painter from 1517 to 1575. Born in Utrecht and died in Antwerp. Served Emperor Charles V (King Carlos I of Spain), Philip II, and the Duke of Alba, Governor of Spanish Flanders. His profound style of painting, characterized by sharp psychological depictions and a strong realism, influenced Sánchez Coello and built the foundations of Spanish portrait painting.
