Born in 1553. The second son of Sakai Masachika. Serving alongside his father under Tokugawa Ieyasu, he fought in the Battle of Anegawa and the Battle of Nagakute. In 1570, he succeeded the family headship and became the lord of Nishio Castle in Mikawa (Aichi Prefecture). After serving as the lord of Kawagoe Castle in Musashi, he became the first head of the Sakai family to become the lord of Umayabashi (later Maebashi) Domain in Kozuke (Gunma Prefecture) in 1603.
