A writer from the Kyrgyz Republic. He writes in Kyrgyz and Russian. In 1952, while studying at an agricultural university, his first short story, "Juid the Newspaper Boy," was published in a newspaper. After graduating in 1953, he began publishing his own works while working as a livestock technician. His novel "Djamilya" (1958, translated into Japanese as "Two People in a Painting"), which tells the story of a young Kyrgyz woman who rebels against rural customs in search of love and happiness, was highly praised by the French translator, poet Louis Aragon, and won the Lenin Prize. In his works "Toporek in a Red Tricornered Hat" (1961), "The First Teacher" (1962), "Farewell, Grisalui!" (1966), and "Early Spring Cranes" (1975), he portrays new human relationships emerging in backward Central Asia with a rich ethnic color. In 1972, he collaborated with the Uzbek playwright Kaltay Muhamedzhanov (1928-2001) on the play Climbing Mount Fuji, and in the novellas White Steamship (1970), Spotted Dog Running Along the Shore (1977), A Day Longer than a Century (1980), The Execution Platform (1986), and Cassandra's Brand (1994), he created magnificent mythological and philosophical worlds. From 1988 to 1990, he served as editor-in-chief of the magazine Foreign Literature. During the perestroika period, he became a member of Gorbachev's presidential council, and served as the Soviet (later Russian) ambassador to Luxembourg from the end of 1990 to 1994.
