Examples of (1) that are common to all sects include the Shika Hoyo (four-point memorial service) and the Kokyo Rongi (lectures on sutras and theories) services, while examples of (2) include the Daihannya Tendoku (recitation of the Great Perfection of Wisdom) service and Keka (repentance) service (repentance ritual) for the purpose of prayer, the Senbo (repentance) service and Koshiki (lecture on repentance) service for the purpose of offering prayers to the Buddha and ancestors, the Fusatsu (closing the Buddha) service for the purpose of self-cultivation, and the Ryuugi (standing on the doctrine of the truth) service (Ryuugi, Rongi) for the purpose of testing academic knowledge. Also, those used only by certain sects and belonging to (1) are the Shingon sect's Rishu Zammai and Daimandara offerings, the Tendai sect's Mandara offerings, and the Jodo Shinshu sect's Nenzan offerings, while those used to belong to (2) are the Tendai sect's Miek offerings, the Jodo sect's Giyoki offerings, and the Jodo Shinshu sect's Daishi Eigu offerings, which are used to offer a memorial to the founder of the temple, the Jodo sect's Juya offerings, which are used to pray for rebirth in the Pure Land, and the Ji sect's Betsujinenbutsu offerings, which are used to welcome spring. In addition, each sect has its own form of offerings that involve the recitation of the scriptures that are the basis of the sect, and both the Tendai and Shingon sects have various forms of offerings based on esoteric Buddhist practices.
