...It is a mountainous volcanic island, with cliffs rising to 150-300m on the south and southwest coasts, and the island's highest peak, Mount Temetiu, is about 1200m above sea level. Atuona, the center of the island, which has a radio station, a hospital, and other facilities, was the headquarters of the French Marquise government from 1904, but was moved to Taiohae on Nuku Hiva in the 1940s. The painter Gauguin died here.
