Johnson, while his second work, The Glorious Knight of the Pestle (c. 1607), is an elaborate comedy that caricatures a medieval romance of chivalry, ridiculing the theater-going attitude of the public theater audience and ridiculing the ignorance of the middle class. His close collaboration with John Fletcher (1579-1625), which began around 1608 and continued until he married and retired from writing five years later, produced about ten highly unified works, and in later years the joint name of "Beaumont and Fletcher" came to be treated as if it were the name of a single author. Their tragedies and comedies, in particular, had a unique color and were very popular, as they suited the tastes of the audience, which was gradually becoming aristocratic.
