Unsho Ikkei

A Rinzai sect monk from the Muromachi period. His posthumous name was Zen Master Koshu. He was from Yamashiro (Kyoto Prefecture). He was the son of Ichijo Tsunetsugu, an instructor for the Ashikaga clan. At the age of six, he entered Yamashiro Joon-ji Temple, which was built by his father, and inherited the teachings of its founder, Kizan Enren. He served as the head priest at Tofuku-ji Temple, and in 1430 (Eikyou 2), he became the abbot of Yamashiro Fumon-ji Temple. In the same year, he was invited by Prince Fushiminomiya Sadanari to lecture on the Genko Shakusho at his villa. In 1441 (Kakitsu 1), he became the 132nd abbot of Tofuku-ji Temple, and in 1449 (Houtoku 1), he was elevated to Nanzen-ji Temple (the 172nd abbot), and after leaving, he established the Hosho-an hermitage within Tofuku-ji Temple and lectured on the Koshu Hyakujo Seiki. 室町時代の臨済宗の僧。諡号は弘宗禅師。山城(京都府)の人。足利家の指南役一条経嗣の子。6歳のときに父の建立した山城成恩寺に入り,開山の奇山円然の法を嗣いだ。東福寺で首座を勤め,永享2(1430)年山城普門寺の住持となる。同6年には伏見宮貞成親王に招かれ,離宮にて『元亨釈書』を講じた。嘉吉1(1441)年東福寺の第132世となり,宝徳1(1449)年南禅寺(第172世)に昇住,退去したのちは,東福寺内に宝渚庵を構えて『敕修百丈清規』の講義を行った。これを桃源瑞仙が筆録したものが『雲桃抄』である。<著作>『敕修百丈清規雲桃抄』『五燈一覧図』
