Also known as the ESR process. This steel refining method was developed in the United States in 1937 as the Hopkins process, then developed in the Soviet Union, and rapidly adopted in Japan from around 1970. Its principle, as shown in the figure, is to melt a consumable electrode, which is the raw material for molten steel, by the electrical resistance heat of the molten slag, and the molten steel that drops and sinks in the slag is continuously solidified in a water-cooled mold. Since there is no vacuum exhaust system, the furnace body is simple and operation is relatively easy, so it is applied not only to high-grade steel but also to large forged steel products, and large furnaces of about 200 tons are now in operation. ESR法ともいう。1937年にアメリカでホプキンズ法として開発され,その後ソ連で発展し,日本では70年ころから急速に採用されるようになった鋼の精錬法。その原理は,図に示すように,溶融スラグの電気抵抗熱によって溶鋼原材料である消耗電極を溶解し,スラグ中を滴下沈降した溶鋼を水冷鋳型内で連続的に凝固させていくことにある。真空排気系がないため炉体が簡単でかつ操業も比較的容易であるため,高級鋼ばかりでなく大型鍛鋼品にも適用され,200t程度の大型炉も稼働するようになっている。
