A small, thorny palm tree found in tropical America. The trunk grows singly or in clusters, and the leaf sheaths have numerous thorns at the base of the ring. The leaves are deeply pinnately lobed and have many lobes. The spadix emerges from the leaf sheaths and is sessile or stalked. There are two spadixes, each with bristles or thorns. The flowers are small to slightly large, pale yellow or bluish green. The fruit is ovoid or globular, often dark blue when ripe, and 2-6 cm in diameter. It is one of the larger genera of palms, with about 200 species found in tropical America and the West Indies, making it difficult to classify.
