This first Shochiku film was shot by cameraman Henry Kotani, who had returned from Hollywood. …　これとは別に松竹は，1920年の《島の女（むすめ）》(木村錦花監督)を皮切りに商業主義による映画製作にとりかかった。この松竹第1回作品の撮影をしたのが，ハリウッド帰りのカメラマン･ヘンリー小谷で，蒲田撮影所のスタッフにアメリカの撮影技術を伝授し，みずから監督もした《虞美人草》(1921)はヒットして，主演の栗島すみ子を最初のスター女優にした。《虞美人草》は内容的には旧来の新派となんら変わらなかったが，松竹はこの路線の映画を量産するに至り，ヘンリー小谷は早くも21年に松竹を離れた。…
