A general term for figurative clay figures that are modeled after man-made or natural objects, and that represent various implements. They range from weapons and military equipment such as yugishi (roof guards), armor, swords, and tomo (swords), to benches, clothing covers, sashiba (sashes), and even kitchen utensils. 人工物や自然物をかたどった形象埴輪のうち,各種の器材を表わしたものの総称。靭 (ゆぎ) ,鎧,太刀,鞆 (とも) などの武器,武具の類から,腰掛,衣蓋 (きぬがさ) ,翳 (さしば) ,さらには厨房具などもある。家屋関係のものは特に家形埴輪と呼ばれる。
