A county-level city in the northeastern part of Hunan Province, China, belonging to the prefecture-level city of Yueyang. Population 752,000 (2014). Located in the lower reaches of the Miluo River (250 km long), a tributary of the Xiang River, it is known as the place where Qu Yuan, a loyal subject of the Chu state and famous poet, committed suicide during the Warring States period, out of concern for his country. The Beijing-Guang Railway and the Beijing-Guang Expressway pass through the city. Historic sites include the Quzi Shrine, which commemorates Qu Yuan, and his tomb. Since 2005, the Miluo River International Dragon Boat Festival, an international dragon boat race, has been held every year. The dragon boat race originated from a festival to honor Qu Yuan.
