German and American film director known as the "master of film noir." Born in Memphis, Texas, while his parents (his father was a banker from Leipzig) were traveling in the United States. After working as a stage actor, director, and producer, he joined UFA in 1925 as a subtitler for German versions of American films, and after working as an assistant director, editor, and scriptwriter, in 1929 he co-directed the experimental feature film The Sunday People, using documentary techniques, with Edgar Ulmer (1904-72).

〈フィルム･ノワールの巨匠〉として知られるドイツおよびアメリカの映画監督。両親(父はライプチヒの銀行家)が旅行滞在中のアメリカのテキサス州メンフィスで生まれる。舞台の俳優，演出家，プロデューサーから，1925年，アメリカ映画のドイツ語版の字幕制作者としてウーファ社に入り，助監督，編集者，脚本家を経て，29年，記録映画の手法による実験的な長編《日曜日の人々》をエドガー･ウルマー(1904‐72)と共同監督。
