[died] 9 February 1934. Forest Row. British mountaineer, explorer, geographer and writer. From 1884 he advocated for the recognition of geography as an independent subject in British universities. During an expedition to the Middle Caucasus in 1868, he was the first to summit its highest peak, Mount Elibrus (5,642 m), the highest peak in Russia west of the Urals. In 1899 he attempted to climb Kangchenjunga (8,586 m) in the Himalayas, and in 1905 the Rwenzori Mountains in Central Africa, but failed. He was secretary of the Royal Geographical Society from 1881 to 1894, its president from 1914 to 1917, and president of the British Association of Authors from 1908 to 1909. His books include "The Italian Alps" (1875), "The Exploration of the Caucasus" (1896), "Round Kanchenjunga" (1903), and two editions of "Murray's Guide to Switzerland."
