A vessel used for drinking sake. Depending on the shape and size, characters such as san (盞), shi (巵), ko (觚), shaku (約), shou (觴), and many others are used. Many of these characters contain the character 'horn', and it is known that in ancient times, cups made of animal horns were used (horn cup, rhyton). In Japanese, 'sakazuki' means 'a bowl (a cup or vessel) for drinking sake,' and 'tsuki' refers to a bowl-shaped earthenware vessel. Since ancient times, unglazed tiles were generally used, and eventually ceramics, gold and silver ware, lacquerware, etc. came to be used.
