A large-scale hunting method in which a large number of people surround a hunting ground, cornering and shooting animals. As the Makigari ritual remains at Suwa Shrine in Nagano Prefecture and Aso Shrine in Kumamoto Prefecture, it is believed to have originally been a religious ceremony to inquire into the will of the mountain god. In the Middle Ages, it was also held as military training for samurai, and the Makigari at Fuji held by Minamoto no Yoritomo in 1193 became famous as the revenge for the Soga brothers.
