Born: 29 August 1805, Normanston, Suffolk Died April 1, 1872. A theologian of the Church of England at Cambridge. One of the proponents of Christian socialism. He studied at Cambridge University, and was professor of history and literature (1840-53), professor of theology (46-53), and professor of moral philosophy (66-72) at King's College. He showed great theological tolerance and opposed the conflicts between Christian denominations. In his main work, The Kingdom of Christ (37), he extracted positive elements from various Christian traditions and attempted to unify them. He also cooperated in the Christian socialist movement and the founding of Queen's College (48) for the education of women, and was the first principal of the Workingmen's College in London (54). His other major works include Moral and Metaphysical Philosophy (50-62), Theological Essays (53), and The Doctrine of Sacrifice (54).
