A village in Kitagunma County, central Gunma Prefecture. Population 2,250 (1995). It occupies the southern slope of Mt. Onoko, with the Agatsuma River flowing east along its southern border. 70% of the total area is forested, and most of the cultivated land is sloping fields. Shiitake mushrooms and konjac are cultivated here. Andesite is mined from Mt. Miko near Onokami Station on the Agatsuma Line and shipped outside the prefecture. There is a village-run hot spring center in Shiokawa along the Agatsuma River. The population has been declining since the 1960s, and the area has been designated a depopulated area. 群馬県中央部,北群馬郡の村。人口2250(1995)。小野子山南斜面を占め,南境を吾妻川が東流する。総面積の7割を山林が占め,耕地は傾斜畑が中心。シイタケやコンニャクの栽培が行われる。吾妻線小野上駅付近の御甲山では安山岩が採掘され,県外に移出されている。吾妻川沿いの塩川に村営の温泉センターがある。1960年代以降人口減少が続いており,過疎地域の指定を受けている。【千葉 立也】
