? - 494 or 493 BCE Tyrant of Miletus. Around 512 BC, he participated in the Persian King Darius I (the Great)'s campaign against Scythia, where he persuaded the tyrants of Greek cities who were about to rebel, and was given Myrcinos, near what would later become Amphipolis, as a fief. However, Darius doubted his loyalty and invited him to Susa, where he remained. During this time, his adopted son Aristagoras became tyrant of Miletus and started an Ionian revolt, but it failed. Histiaeus was freed from Susa, but could not return to Miletus, and engaged in piracy from Byzantium, where he was captured and executed by the Persian governor.
