The vestments worn by Catholic priests over their robes and stole during mass. They are circular outer garments with a hole in the middle for the head, derived from a cloak called a penula worn by commoners in Rome around the 1st and 2nd centuries, but do not have a hood. They fell out of use as civilian clothing around the 6th century, and continue to exist only as liturgical clothing. After the 14th century, the shape was changed to make them easier to wear, but in the late 19th century, they reverted to the old Roman style, and are still in use today.
