Padang - Padang (English spelling)

Japanese: パダン - ぱだん(英語表記)Padang
Padang - Padang (English spelling)

A port city on the west coast of central Sumatra facing the Indian Ocean. It is the largest city in Central Sumatra and the capital of West Sumatra Province. It has a population of 477,344 (1990), 941,136 (2018 estimate). It is hot and humid due to its closeness to the equator, and its annual precipitation exceeds 4,000 mm. It has the Padang Plateau, the oldest open area in Sumatra, as its hinterland, and is a key transportation hub. It also has an airport. The port ships rice, rubber, tea, tobacco, and copra produced in the hinterland, as well as coal from the nearby Ombiling coalfield. There is a cement factory nearby. The residents are mostly Minangkabau, but there are also many Chinese residents. In 1663, the Dutch East India Company obtained a trade monopoly, and in 1680, a trading post was established. After that, it was briefly ruled by the British and French, but eventually the Dutch came to rule for a long time.
