Takayama [city] - Takayama
A city in northern Gifu Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1936. The city center, located in the Takayama Basin along the Miyagawa River, is almost in the center of the Hida region. It was the castle town of the Kanamori clan, and was a shogunate territory in the late Edo period. It is called Little Kyoto because of its beautiful scenery and grid-like streets. It is connected by the Takayama Main Line and the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway, and woodworking is thriving, producing plywood and furniture, and is a specialty of Ichi-i craftsmanship and Hida Shunkei lacquerware. In the east, there is the Oku-Hida hot spring resort area, including Shinhotaka Onsen and Hirayu Onsen, and it is a base for tourists to Mount Norikura and Shirakawa-go. The Takayama Festival, held twice a year in April and October, is famous. There are many historical sites and cultural assets, such as the remains of the tower of Hida Kokubunji Temple (historic site), the large ginkgo tree (natural monument), the remains of the Jin'ya (historic site), and the private house of the Kusakabe residence, and the morning market is also famous. As a result of the merger, the city's area became the largest in Japan, surpassing the areas of Osaka and Kagawa prefectures. In February 2005, the city incorporated Kukuno Town, Nyukawa Village, Kiyomi Village, Shogawa Village, Miya Village, Asahi Village, Takane Village, Kokufu Town, and Kamiho Village in Yoshiki County.
