Mitsui Takayoshi
Year of death: December 20, 1885 (Meiji 18)
Year of birth: Bunka 5.9.26 (1808.11.14)
The eighth head of the Mitsui family, a wealthy merchant family in the Edo period. Son of Takanari. His mother was Retsu. In 1837, he took on the name of the 13th generation Hachiroemon. In 1849, he separated the two Ren families from his family and worked to reform the family's management during the difficult financial period after the Tenpo period. When the port of Yokohama was opened, he accepted foreign financial purveyors and opened a Yokohama store, actively trying to enter new businesses, but at the end of the Edo period, he was forced into a difficult situation due to losses at the Yokohama store and government subsidies from the shogunate. However, he was able to discern the direction of the political situation, and when the Toba-Fushimi War broke out, he made a donation to the Imperial Court, quickly making clear his support for the anti-shogunate faction. After the Meiji Restoration, he strengthened his ties with the government by serving as the head of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's financial and grain accounting department and president of a foreign exchange company, and became the first president of the Mitsui Bank, which was established in 1876. His generous personality is evident in the fact that he promoted Toshizaemon Minomura and used him highly. <References>Mitsui Bunko ed., "Mitsui Business History," main volume 1, 2
