A perennial herb of the Ranunculaceae family (illustration) that grows in moist grasslands in the alpine and subalpine zones, and sometimes in grasslands along mountain streams. It reproduces vegetatively by sending out creeping branches underground, and usually grows in colonies. There is usually one basal leaf, but sometimes two or three, with a long petiole, and the leaf blade, 5-20 (30) cm long, is cordate at the base, palmately divided into 7-9 lobes, and the lobes have sharp notched serrations. The stem is 30-60 cm tall and slightly branched at the top. The upper cauline leaves are similar to the basal leaves, but are small and stalkless.
