Mononobe no Moriya

Japanese:
Mononobe no Moriya

A great lord in the reign of Emperor Bidatsu and Emperor Yomei. Son of Okoshi. Also called Yuge Moriya due to his mother's surname. In the first year of the reign of Emperor Bidatsu (572), he became a great lord following the reign of Emperor Kinmei, and came into conflict with the Minister Soga no Umako. In the 14th year of the same year, he petitioned for the abolition of Buddhism and was granted permission. He burned the temple and Buddha statue that Umako had built, and dumped the remaining Buddha statue in Horie, Naniwa. In the same year, after the Emperor's death, when he gave a eulogy at the funeral palace, he and Umako mocked each other's appearances, and it is said that this caused a grudge between them, but this is a story that puts the cart before the horse. After Yomyo ascended to the throne, he continued to be a great rival, but eventually allied with Prince Anahobe, the Emperor's half-brother, and tried to support him. Two years later (587), when Yomyo died, he tried to have Anahobe take the throne, but the prince was soon killed by Umako. Moriya and Umako were now faced off against each other, but Umako, who had gained the support of most of the imperial family and powerful clans, attacked his base in Shibukawa, Kawachi (Yao City, Osaka Prefecture), and Moriya was finally shot to death. After the rebellion, he divided up half of his slaves and his residential land and donated them to Shitennoji Temple. Umako's wife was Moriya's younger sister, and Tokito commented that Umako had foolishly killed Moriya according to his wife's plan.
