In the Torpedinidae (electric ray), more than 1,000 electric plates are stacked like coins at the base of the pectoral fin to form electric columns, totaling about 2,000. Each column is connected in the same way as many batteries connected in parallel, which increases the capacity, making it suitable for passing electric current in seawater, which has low electrical resistance.
