A city in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua. It faces El Paso, Texas, across the Rio Grande River. Its population was 789,522 (1990). Although it is a semi-desert region, the development of irrigation facilities has made the Juarez Valley a major cotton-growing area. Tourists coming in and out of the country to buy duty-free goods have been coming in and out of the country, and commercial activity is thriving. In recent years, industrial complexes have been built as export and processing areas, and the population has increased significantly. In 1888, the city was renamed from its former name, El Paso del Norte, after President Juarez. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
