A plateau in northern Wakayama Prefecture, spanning the two towns of Kimino and Arida-gawa. It has been designated a prefectural natural park. It is an elevated semi-plain centered on Iwaishi-ga-mine (870m), the highest peak of the Nagamine mountain range that runs west from Mount Koya. It is covered with silver grass and has large quartz phyllite stones called Kasaishi and Tachiiwa, which are said to be the former site of Kobo Daishi (Kukai), from which the name Iwaishi is derived. Iwaishi Myojin Shrine, which enshrines this rock as its deity, is located at the summit and at the trailheads on the north and south foothills. There is a prefectural animal protection center, a national lodging facility, and a campsite.
