Also known as backcrossing. Crossing the first generation hybrid with one of its parents. The parents do not have to be the true parents, as long as they have the same genotype. Backcrossing with a parent that has a recessive gene for a certain allele is specifically called a test cross. The phenotype of the resulting offspring directly represents the genotype of the hybrid's germ cells, so a test cross can be used to test what genotypes were produced in the germ cells of the hybrid and in what proportion. With one pair of alleles, offspring with dominant and recessive traits should be produced in a one-to-one ratio, and this can be used to calculate the recombination value.

戻し交配とも。雑種第１代と，その両親のいずれかとの交雑。親は真の親でなくても，同一の遺伝子型をもつものであればよい。ある対立遺伝子について劣性の遺伝子をもつ親との戻し交雑は特に検定交雑と呼ばれる。生じる子の表現型は，雑種の生殖細胞の遺伝子型をそのまま表すから，検定交雑によって，雑種の生殖細胞にどのような遺伝子型のものがどのような割合でできたかを検定できる。１対の対立遺伝子であれば優性と劣性の形質をもつ子が１対１で生じるはずで，これを用いて組換え価を求めることができる。
