A British Whig (Liberal Party) critical magazine founded in Edinburgh in 1802 by Francis Jeffrey, Francis Horner, and Henry Bloom (all Scottish lawyers) and Sidney Smith (an English religious leader). Its reviews took the form of book reviews, but were not necessarily limited to that format. They covered a wide range of topics, including politics, religion, society, literature, and the arts, and were written with a free and vigorous tone. The first issue was initially printed in 750 copies, but they quickly sold out, and another 750 copies were reprinted. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
