Commonwealth Literature

Japanese: コモンウェルス文学 - こもんうぇるすぶんがく

A general term for literature written in English in former British colonies (excluding the United States). Because it spans a wide area, including African countries, Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, the West Indies, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, there is little mutual connection or influence between the various colonies, except for the influence of political, economic, and cultural domination by the former colonial powers. As such, rather than forming a substantial literary bloc, it is a rather convenient literary division, and it is no coincidence that research in this field began to gain momentum in the 1960s, when Britain was isolated due to the EC issue.

旧イギリス領植民地(アメリカを除く)の英語で書かれた文学の総称。アフリカ諸国，オーストラリア，カナダ，インド，マレーシア，シンガポール，ニュージーランド，スリランカ，西インド諸島，パキスタン，バングラデシュなど広範な地域にまたがるため，旧宗主国による政治･経済･文化支配の影響という一点を除いて，相互の関連や影響は薄い。したがって実質的な文学ブロックを形成するというより，かなり便宜的な文学区分であり，この分野の研究が盛んになり始めたのがEC問題でイギリスが孤立していた1960年代であるのも，あながち偶然とはいえない。
