Germination test - Hatsu-gashi-ken

It is to check the vitality of seeds (the proportion and speed of sprouting, the former is called the germination rate, the latter the germination vigor). Usually, 2-3 sheets of filter paper are placed in a petri dish and watered, and 100 or more seeds are sown on it and placed in a room or incubator. Any seeds that germinate or take root are considered germinated, and the number of germinated seeds is counted every day, and the ratio to the number of seeds tested is calculated to give the germination rate. Germination vigor is calculated by expressing the number of seeds that germinate within a certain number of days (the number of days is set for each crop) as a percentage of the test seeds, and indicates the degree of seed vitality. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries requires seed dealers to display the results of germination tests when distributing designated seeds.
