Kanto

The Tanabata festival, held in Akita City for four days from August 3rd to 6th every year, is known as one of the three major festivals in the Tohoku region. Nine stalks are tied horizontally to thick bamboo poles over 10 meters long, and 46 lanterns are hung from them, which are then lit up and paraded by young people from each neighborhood. There are small kanto poles for children, but adults compete by carrying poles weighing 50 to 60 kilograms on their shoulders, foreheads, and waists. Over a hundred kanto poles bearing the crests of each neighborhood are lined up in the night sky. The kanto poles are said to have a similar origin to the Nebuta Festival in Aomori, as the custom of floating them down the river at the end of the festival and the kanto poles were once called neburi nagashi (sleep) ... There are records from the Edo period such as "Akita Kirei" from 1804 (Bunka 1), "Akita Mukashi Monogatari" from 1751 (Horeki 1), and those by Sugae Masumi.
