A nomadic tribe in Fars Province in southwestern Iran. They speak an Iranian language. Since the Safavid dynasty, they had been under the control of neighboring Arabs, but in 1861-62 they gained independence and allied with four other nomadic tribes in the eastern part of Fars Province to form a tribal confederation called Khamse. An excellent research report by anthropologist F. Barth, Nomads of Southern Persia (1961), states that the tribe had 3,000 tents. Their winter camps are in the east and southeast of Shiraz, and their summer camps in the northeast. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
