Cassandra japonica - Cassandra japonica

A biennial plant of the legume family (APG classification: Fabaceae). The stem is thin and can reach 60 cm in length. The leaves are even-pinnate compound leaves with 8-12 leaflets, and the tips form tendrils that divide into 1-4 parts and twine around other plants. In April and May, 1-3 small pale bluish-purple butterfly-shaped flowers are produced in racemes in the leaf axils. The legumes contain 3-6 seeds, are narrowly elliptical, 1-1.5 cm long, and hairless. They grow on roadsides and in fields from Honshu to Okinawa, and are widely distributed in the warm temperate zones of Eurasia. The name means "intermediate grass" because its shape is intermediate between the common vetch (Yahazu pea) and the common pea (Suzumeno pea).

マメ科（APG分類：マメ科）の越年草。茎は細く、長さ60センチメートルに及ぶ。葉は偶数羽状複葉で8～12枚の小葉からなり、先端は1～4分する巻きひげとなって他物に絡みつく。4～5月、葉腋(ようえき)の総状花序に小さな淡青紫色の蝶形花(ちょうけいか)を1～3個つける。豆果は3～6個の種子を含み、狭楕円(きょうだえん)形、長さ1～1.5センチメートルで無毛である。本州から沖縄の道端や野原に生え、ユーラシア大陸の暖温帯に広く分布する。名は、カラスノエンドウ（ヤハズエンドウ）とスズメノエンドウの中間的な形であることから、カス間草の意味でよばれる。
