Hanhajime - Hanhajime

Japanese:
Hanhajime - Hanhajime
One of the Shogunate events. Modeled on the Imperial Court's "Kitsushiyo-Sou" ceremony, the Kamakura Shogunate held a ceremony called "Kitsushiyo-Hajime" for the opening of government offices, the beginning of the year, the start of a new Shogunate, appointments, and the change of era, in which the magistrate would write a letter of approval, make a clean copy, and present it to the Shogun for inspection, who would then affix his seal (kao) to the letter. During the Muromachi period, the ceremony in which the seal was affixed to a letter for the first time after the Shogun took office, that is, after the Shogun's succession, came to be called "Gohan-Hajime" and distinguished from other "Kitsushiyo-Hajime" ceremonies. The Shogun wore a "tateeboshi" (tate-eboshi hat) and a "hita-tare" (hita-tare jacket), and signed the official seal on the official document presented by the magistrate.
