Noro Kaiseki

A Southern painter of the late Edo period. His given name was Takashi, and his pen names were Shorei and Takatoshi. He was originally called Hanseki and later Kaiseki. He also had other pen names such as Waibaikyo and Shihekisai, and was also called Daigoryu. Born into a family of doctors in Wakayama, Kishu, he studied Confucianism under Ito Rangu from the age of 10, and later, taking a liking to painting, traveled to Kyoto to study. At the age of 47, he entered the service of the Kishu Domain, and held various positions including copper mining. At the age of 21, he studied under Ike no Taiga, but his style was hardly influenced by Taiga, and his gentle, logical landscape paintings were close to the orthodox Southern School style. He was fond of painting Nachi Falls, and also produced unusual works such as "Rock and Rose Flowers." His sayings include "Shibisai Painted Tales," "Kaiseki Short Talks," and "Kaiseki Short Stories."

江戸後期の南画家。名は隆、字(あざな)は松齢、隆年。初め班石、のち介石と号す。ほかに矮梅居(わいばいきょ)、四碧斎などの号をもち、第五隆とも称した。紀州和歌山の医師の家に生まれ、10歳のころより伊藤蘭嵎(らんぐう)について儒学を修め、のち画事を好んで京へ遊学。47歳で紀州藩に出仕し、銅山方などを歴任している。画(え)は21歳のときに池大雅(いけのたいが)についたが、その画風には大雅の影響はほとんどなく、温和で理の勝った山水画は正統的な南宗画様式に近い。那智滝(なちのたき)図を好んで描き、また『紅玉芙蓉(ふよう)図』のような異色の作もある。語録に『四碧斎畫話』『介石小談』『介石小話』がある。
