Hiroshi Inagaki

Film director. Born in Tokyo. His father was a Shinpa actor, so he performed on stage from an early age. In 1922 (Taisho 11), he joined the acting department of Nikkatsu Mukojima, but later switched to directing, releasing "Tenka Taiheiki" (1928) for Kataoka Chiezo Productions. He went on to create lyrical works such as "Mother of the Eyelids" and "Ippon-to Dohyo-iri" (both 1931), and "Yataro Gasa" (1932), and even after the talkie era, he became a representative director of period films with the "Miyamoto Musashi" series for Nikkatsu and Toho. He also tried his hand at modern dramas, releasing the excellent "The Life of a Outlaw" (1943), and after World War II, such fine works as "Te wo Tsunagu Kodomo" (1948) and "Wasurerareta Kodomo" (1949). In 1958, the remake of the novel, "The Life of a Lawless Matsu," won the Grand Prix at the Venice International Film Festival.
