Industries involved in the production and distribution of wood include material production, lumbering, and lumber trading. Material production involves felling standing trees and producing materials (lumber). Lumbering involves purchasing materials and processing them (primary to tertiary processing) until they are suitable for the intended use (secondary products). Business types include the lumber industry, plywood industry, and laminated lumber industry. Lumber traders are those who mainly sell secondary products to intermediate consumers such as the construction industry, and middlemen who act as intermediaries (intermediaries) between lumber producers and consumers, and between consumers and wholesalers. There are lumber importers, wholesalers, and retailers, and depending on the products they handle, they are classified as log wholesalers, product wholesalers, and fine wood wholesalers, and depending on the sales method, they are classified as market wholesalers, center wholesalers, and attached wholesalers. In Japan, lumber is used for lumber (mainly construction materials), pulp material, plywood, pit timber, and others. Lumber mills mainly import timber and are large-scale operations, but with the exception of pulp timber and plywood mills, most of the operations are small-scale.

木材の生産，流通にたずさわる業種で，素材生産，製材，木材商がある。素材生産は立木の伐採から，素材 (用材) の生産を行う。製材は，素材を購入し，使用目的に応じた製品 (1次加工～3次加工) になるまでに仕上げる (2次製品) 。企業種としては製材工業，合板工業，集成材工業などがある。木材商はおもに2次製品を建築業その他の中間消費者に販売する者，また，木材生産者と消費者，消費者と問屋との中間商人 (仲介業) としての仲買人をいう。木材輸入商，卸売問屋，小売業などがあり，取扱う商品により，原木問屋，製品問屋，銘木問屋，販売方法により市売問屋，センター問屋，付売問屋などがある。日本での木材用途は製材用 (おもに建築材) ，パルプ用材，合板用，坑木用，その他となっている。製材用は外材が中心で規模は大きいが，あとはパルプ用材，合板用を除けば，いずれも零細経営が多い。
