Posadas (English spelling)
The capital of the province of Misiones, in the northeastern corner of Argentina. It is a river port city located on the south bank of the Paraná River, which forms the border with Paraguay, about 800 km north-northeast of the capital Buenos Aires. It started as a trading post for Paraguayans and was originally called Trinchera de los Paraguayos, but after the Paraguayan War (1864-70), it became Argentine territory and was renamed to its current name in 1879. It is a shipping port for the agricultural and forestry region that spreads behind it, and distributes rice, tobacco, corn, mate tea (Paraguayan tea), citrus fruits, livestock, and timber. The city is home to industries such as lumber and wood processing, as well as meat, flour, mate tea processing, and textiles. There are many ruins of Jesuit mission settlements registered as cultural heritage sites in the surrounding area, including San Ignacio Mini, and it is also a tourist base for the famous Iguazu Falls, so it is a popular tourist destination. The city is connected to the Argentine railway network by ferry to Encarnación on the opposite bank of the Paraná River. Population: 219,824 (1991 estimate).
