Originally a type of flannel, flannel is used for slightly thicker clothing fabrics. It can be made in plain weave, but is mainly made from fine woolen yarn, tightly woven into a 2-2 twill pattern, and then shrunk, brushed, and sheared to create a melton-like finish, resulting in a relatively thin woolen fabric with a firm texture. Most colors are light brown or gray with a marbling effect. To create the marbling effect, woolen yarn is spun from wool dyed in similar dark, medium, and light colors. It is used for suits, coats, trousers, clothing fabric, etc. [Kadoyama Yukihiro] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
