A town in Shibata County in southern Miyagi Prefecture. The main settlement is along the Matsuo River, a tributary of the Shiroishi River, and in the Edo period it was a distribution center for safflowers. The Tohoku Expressway runs through the town, and the Yamagata Expressway branches off from it. Agriculture is the main industry, and there is also an industrial complex.
