A general term for insects belonging to the Hepialidae family of Lepidoptera. Primitive moths of medium to large size with similar size and shape of the forewings and hindwings, with approximately 12 wing veins. In the past, families with this type of venation were classified as the Homoptera suborder of Lepidoptera, but in recent classifications, the Hepialidae family, which do not have a well-developed mandible, are classified as the Exoporia suborder. The antennae are very short and the mouthparts are very small. The larvae dig tunnels into the stems of plants and trunks and branches of trees to feed, and the feeding opening is laced with silk-like feces, making it easy to identify damaged trees.
