Catholic Kingdom

From the viewpoint of cultural history, this period is called the Golden Age of Spain (Siglo de Oro). Incidentally, the term "Spanish Empire" was created later, and the Spanish kings at that time commonly referred to their own territories as the Catholic Kingdom (Monarquía católica). Furthermore, if we interpret "empire" as the governing of lands and their inhabitants outside of the Spanish Empire, the "Spanish Empire" lasted until 1898.
