Mokuito - Heathered yarn

Also called twisted thread. It is made by twisting two or more colored threads together and is used in weaving and embroidery. When used in weaving, it creates a marbled look, and has been used in the past for Noshimeji (striped noshimeji) patterns. As an embroidery thread, it is used to express the feathers and fur of birds and animals, and is used very effectively in the Momoyama period Nuihaku (silver leaf embroidery) to express silver grass and reeds.

撚搦(よりからみ)糸ともいう。二色以上の糸を撚り合わせたもので、織物、刺しゅうなどに用いられる。織物に用いれば霜降り状となり、古く熨斗目縞(のしめじま)などにはしばしば使用されている。刺しゅう糸としては鳥獣の羽や毛並みを表したり、とくに桃山時代の縫箔(ぬいはく)ではススキやアシの穂などの表現に非常に効果的に用いられている。
