A city in the southeastern part of Tochigi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the eastern bank of the midstream of the Kinugawa River. The city center developed after the Haga clan built a castle in the late 16th century, and flourished as a distribution center for Moka cotton from early modern times to the end of the Meiji period. It borders Utsunomiya City to the southeast, and is served by the Moka Railway and the Kita-Kanto Expressway. The western area is home to a large industrial complex that produces machinery, chemical and metal products, and automobile parts. Tomatoes, melons, strawberries, and other crops are grown in the surrounding area. Ninomiya Town, Haga County, was incorporated in March 2009. 栃木県南東部の市。1954年市制。鬼怒川中流の東岸を占める。中心市街は16世紀後半,芳賀氏が築城してから発展,近世から明治末期までは真岡木綿の集散地として栄えた。宇都宮市の南東に接し,真岡鉄道,北関東自動車道が通じる。西部一帯は大規模工業団地が立地,機械・化学・金属製品,自動車部品などを生産。周辺ではトマト,メロン,イチゴなどの栽培が行われる。2009年3月芳賀郡二宮町を編入。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。167.34km2。8万2289人(2010)。
